Our Solution 

Singer Valve’s Pressure Reducing Valve with Integral Back-up (PR-SM). The PR-SM control valves have a second and independent operating system superimposed upon the standard primary system. Under normal pressure reducing conditions, the primary pilot senses the downstream pressure through a connection at the valve outlet. Under flowing conditions, the pilot reacts to small changes in pressure to control the valve position by modulating the pressure above the diaphragm in the lower operating chamber. The downstream pressure is maintained virtually steady at the pilot set-point which is adjustable.

Singer Pilot Guarantees Water to Desert Pilgrims

Their Challenge

To accommodate pilgrims who overnight in the Mina Valley during the annual Islamic pilgrimage, the government of Saudi Arabia provides shelter in residential towers and tents. One of the housing projects was plagued with multiple broken pipes and a dysfunctional pressure reducing valve, resulting in floods. Upon inspection by Singer Valve’s Ramzi Soujah, it was discovered that the pressure reducing valves required up to six turns before a pressure change was noted downstream. Also, the pilots’ sensing ports were extremely small and susceptible to being plugged by dirt and mineral build-up.

Our Solution 

Ramzi Soujah replaced the faulty pilot with a Singer Model 160 Pressure Reducing Pilot. The pilot has a non-clogging pilot guide stem above the diaphragm, which is totally removed from the flow of water in the main pilot chamber. Because the outlet is located in the bottom of the pilot, 90 degrees to the inlet, the pilot is self-cleaning and self-flushing, thereby eliminating debris build-up. The pilot was the ideal solution for the Mina housing project.

The Result 

As soon as the pressure reducing valve was installed, the valve began to regulate the pressure. After observing such positive results, the housing contractor purchased Soujah’s entire stock of Singer Model 160 Pressure Reducing Pilots.

Singer's Specialty PRV Regulates Bangkok Pressure

Their Challenge

With water loss up to 30 per cent, Metropolitan Water Authority (MWA) in Bangkok, Thailand, installed pressure reducing valves throughout the city and its suburbs. The valves controlled nighttime pressures accurately, preventing leaks and breaks. However, in some areas, high demand during the day caused the pressure to drop to 10 psi (0.68 bar) or less. Without sufficient pressure differential, regular pressure reducing valves would close, cutting off supply to consumers.

Our Solution

Because typical PRVs cannot open when the pressure drops below 10 psi (0.68 bar), Singer Valve’s instrumentation specialist Eugene Bahia fitted a 12” (300mm) valve with a standard Singer PR pilot and a Singer high-accuracy three-way pilot. By installing the custom combo into Singer’s flow lab, Bahia simulated various pressure and flow conditions. The results were rewarding.  “Because of the large diaphragm and sensing area of the three-way pilot,” says Bahia, “the valve required only seconds to open. And it remained fully open during the day’s high flow demands even with pressure as low as 2 psi (0.14 bar).”

The Result

When the custom unit was installed and tested in Bangkok, the results remained consistent. Pressure was reduced during high pressure periods at night. During low pressure / high flow periods in the day, the valve opened fully, ensuring a constant water supply to consumers. As a result, the water authority has installed numerous 12” (300mm) valves. “Our water loss was about 30 per cent,” says Mr. Ulit, MWA’s director of water loss management. “With Singer Valve, it’s now below 30 per cent.”

Patented Singer Valve Reduces Water Pressure

PATENTED SINGER VALVE REDUCES WATER PRESSURE

East Bay MUDTheir Challenge

“We had problems regulating pressure,” says Ron Lauw, a mechanical maintenance supervisor with East Bay MUD who is now retired. “And we had valves that wouldn’t close when they were supposed to so that caused a lot of problems.” When Kari Oksanen, Singer’s general manager, visited East Bay MUD’s office in Oakland, they found Lauw and his team at the drawing board, trying to create a new valve with standard components.

Our Solution 

Oksanen decided to build a valve, too. “We left it up to them to decide which valve—theirs or ours—worked better for that application,” he says. Oksanen adapted a standard pressure-reducing valve to include an integrated backup system with a second diaphragm and a secondary pilot system that did not require electricity. Several months later, he returned with a prototype of the first-ever Pressure Reducing Valve with Integral Back-up (PR-SM) valve. The four-inch valve was installed with excellent results. 

The Result 

East Bay MUD chose Oksanen’s valve and as a result, they have 100 per cent surge protection and huge cost savings due to no emergency repairs. Singer’s PR-SM valves, which are now patented, have been installed in water districts around the world.
